Medicinal Activities
Common Uses in DogsThe rich content of berberine in this herb gives it strong antibiotic and antibacterial properties. Oregon grape can therefore be used in place of the endangered Goldenseal to fight against bacterial and fungal infections of the ears, eyes, and the mucous membranes of the vagina and urinary tract. For ear infections or ear mites, use an oil infusion of the herb. Apply 1-10 drops at a time in each ear one to two times a day until the infection is gone. The oil infusion can also be used as an antibiotic for insect bites and stings, cuts, and other minor injuries. For conjunctivitis, use an alcohol tincture of the herb. Dilute 4 drops of the tincture into 1 ounce of sterile saline and place a few drops into the infected eye. For urinary tract infection, combine the herb with marshmallow, licorice, or plantain for more soothing effect. This herb is also effective in the stimulation of liver function. It can ease chronic constipation and improve itchy, flaky skin conditions in dogs. In this respect, it functions in the same way as dandelion - only stronger. Therefore, Oregon grape should not be administered to dogs with acute liver disease or existing liver injuries. Finally, the bitter tonic in this herb aids digestion in dogs. Place a drop or two of the root tincture on the dog's tongue and a series of reactions will be triggered. First, an instantaneous salivary response occurs. Then bile, digestive enzymes and acids are released into the digestive system. As a result, using the bitter tonic before each meal helps dogs with chronic indigestion and malabsorption.PrecautionsThis herb should not be used in dogs with acute liver disease, or in pregnant and nursing dogs.AvailabilityThis herb is available in various forms (tincture, decoction, oil infusion, powdered root) from herb retailers.![]() Related Topics: Safe Herbs for Dogs unsafe herbs for pets How to Make Herbal Remedies References J.A.
