Common Uses in DogsOatstraw is one of the best herbs for the nervous system, especially when it is under stress or debilitated. It's bidirectional properties work well with dogs who are mentally lethargic as well as dogs who are chronically nervous. It can calm down a dog with chronic nervousness, but it can stimulate the nervous system of a lethargic dog. This herb is also a tonic that strengthens nerve function following periods of sedation or anesthesia. Oatstraw tea or tincture can therefore be fed to dogs recovering from exhaustion or suffering from depression disorders. The tea can be made by adding a teaspoon of oatstraw to 8 ounces of hot water. Feed 2 to 4 ounces of the cooled tea to dogs. Externally, oatstraw is a soothing remedy for various skin conditions. Simply boil about 1 pound of oatstraw in 2 quarts of water for about half an hour. Strain the liquid and add it to your dog's bathwater, just before the final rinse.PrecautionsToo much oatstraw may cause vomiting or excitability. If that happens, reduce the amount being fed.AvailabilityOatstraw is available at health food stores.Related Topics: Safe Herbs for Dogs unsafe herbs for pets How to Make Herbal Remedies References J.A.
