Natural Organic Frozen Raw FoodsIf feeding fresh raw meat and bones to your dog is not feasible, consider using frozen raw foods. These usually come either in a formula of raw meat, grains, and fresh vegetables designed to provide complete nutrition, or as pure raw meat designed to be added as a supplement to other types of food. Heat can destroy a lot of nutrients in food, freeze drying, on the other hand, can preserve the nutrition and biological nature of fresh foods - The natural enzymes, amino acids, and probiotics remain intact. Freeze-dried food can be fed alone or added to raw or dry food. Freeze dried food is an excellent and easy way to supplement a dry, kibble diet - it adds more bioavailable nutrients, amino acids and enzymes that kibble lacks. It can also be used as a highly nutritious treat. Because it is very light weight, it is also excellent for camping and traveling. Dehydration suspends the activity of enzymes in the food until the food is re-hydrated. Dehydrated food loses only 3 to 5 percent of the nutrients in the original ingredients because the temperatures used are much lower than those used for canning or for extruding kibble, where the loss can be as much as 60 to 80 percent. Regular canned foods (non-natural) however usually have artificial flavorings and sweeteners added. If your dog is accustomed to this type of canned food, it may take some effort to get her accept the natural healthier type of canned food. Use as much variety in your dog's canned food diet as they will accept. Organic foods offer the best of the canned options as they do not contain pesticide residues and other toxins, thus not giving additional stress to the dog's liver and kidneys. This is especially important for dogs with a compromised immune system. Read the dog food label carefully. Get only those brands that use natural, organic, and/or human-grade ingredients. Also, rotate the kibble you use every month or every other month (gradually transition over a week or more). Don't forget to mix a variety of different high quality canned foods into the diet as a meal or part of the meal. You can also mix raw meat, vegetables and fresh fruits into their food. Always remember, however, that to prevent weight gain, you must use proportionately less of the kibble when adding canned, freeze-dried, or dehydrated food, raw meat, or people food.
