Treats for Overweight Dogs?

by Mary Beth
(Hendersonville, NC)

I use Nutri source large breed dry - one 30 lb bag lasts me 4-5 wks (Staffie, Blk & tan hound, Mini schnauzer).

Thanks to the dog treat cook book Barkers Grub - I make my own organic treats in 5-10 lb batches. I also add kelp and salmon oil to their food - started all this because my hound (Cash) has idiopathic hair loss - her thyroid is fine - Help!!!

My staffie (Nathen) and Schnauzer (Yogi) are "normal" and in good shape. Cash along with hair loss is the only one who is overweight - they all get lots of exercise.

Help - also give green beans for treats - seems like she is always hungry. Any suggestions???

Veggies
by: Mary Beth

Hazel - thank-you for the input - w/o a doubt I give lightly cooked veggies(dogs have a tough time breaking down the cellulose in raw veggies - raw diet another story - stomach temp of prey 108 degrees). Anyhoo - I also incorporate fruit and veggies into my home made treats. Cash is a food hound and counter surfer - a true K-9 character!

Besides green beans, have you tried giving your dog raw carrots? They are more filling, and they are good for dogs' teeth as well. My dog enjoys eating carrots as her treat (she is also a bit chubby!)
