"Wonder Herb": Turmeric for Dogs
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a member of the ginger family, and it contains an active ingredient (which is actually a mix of phenolics) called curcumin. It also contains high amounts of vitamin A, minerals, and protein.
Main Properties of Turmeric
- Liver-Protecting Properties: It has been shown that curcumin stimulates the flow of bile and increases its solubility.
- Anti-inflammatory Properties: Tests have shown that the anti-inflammatory effects of turmeric are comparable to those of cortisone.
- Antioxidant Properties: Turmeric is a powerful antioxidant that can protect the body against damage by free radicals.
- Anti-cancerous Properties: On-going tests are being conducted to prove that curcumin has high anti-cancerous properties. Research so far has been positive - it has shown that it interferes in all steps of cancer formation and progression.
- GI System Enhancer: Turmeric has long been used in Asia as a carminative to decrease gas formation and intestinal spasms, and to improve digestion by increasing secretion of pancreatic enzymes.
- Cardiovascular System Enhancer: Turmeric has positive effects on the cardiovascular system and can lower cholesterol levels and promote healthy blood circulation.
What Turmeric Can Do For Dogs
As you can see from above, turmeric has a lot of medicinal value. It has potent therapeutic activities against a variety of canine diseases, such as arthritis, allergies, diabetes, cognitive dysfunction, heart and liver diseases, and other chronic illnesses.
In addition, because of its anti-cancerous properties, dogs diagnosed with cancer (or dogs susceptible to cancer development) can benefit from this culinary herb as well.
The good news is, so far there has been no adverse side effects or toxicity reported at normal intake levels of turmeric.
Therefore, for cancer prevention and to enhance your dog's general health and body functions, you can easily sprinkle some dried turmeric powder on the dog's food on a regular basis.

If you want to harness the full therapeutic properties of curcumin against a specific canine disease (e.g. arthritis, cancer, etc.), just sprinkling the herb on your dog's food is inadequate - you need to give your dog a curcumin supplement.

Recipe - Green Pea Christmas Tree Cookies
Peas are easy to digest and fennel seeds aid digestion, making this cookie a "tummy pleaser". The red cranberries and green peas provide holiday cheer (at least to the humans).
Ingredients:
- 2 cup frozen peas
- 1/4 cup low-sodium chicken broth
- 3 tablespoons canola oil
- 1 tablespoon fennel seeds
- 1/2 cup dried cranberries
- 2 cups whole-wheat flour, plus more for rolling out dough
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 350F. Lightly dust a baking sheet with flour.
- Combine the frozen peas and broth in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 2 minutes.
- Add the pea mixture, canola oil, fennel seeds, and dried cranberries to a food processor and pulse until the mixture is smooth, about 1 minute.
- Add the flour and baking powder and pulse for about 1 minute, or until the dough gathers into a ball.
- Gather the dough into a ball and transfer directly to the baking sheet. Flatten the ball and shape into a square.
- Dust the top of the dough with additional flour and roll into a 10-inch square.
- With a cookie cutter, cut out Christmas trees and transfer to a flour-dusted baking sheet, about 1/2 inch apart.
- Bake for 30 minutes for a softer cookie or up to 45 minutes for a drier cookie.
- Remove from the oven and allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet.
Until next time... Have a very Happy Holiday!
