We will always Love you Nicholas

I am sorry to hear about everyone's story on this site.

My Sheltie Nicholas, 6.5 years old, suffered from a seizure on September 2, 2009. And then he had 2 other grand mal seizures on Sept 2 (one at the emergency vet where they saw what I had described). He was given a high dosage of Phenabarbital. The medicine did stop the grand mal seizures. However, some petite seizures (twitching of the left lip) did continue but the doctors seem to have controlled them to some degree with the medicine.

We brought him home on Sept 4 which he had 3 petite seizures within 3 hours. I took him back to the emergency vet. They kept him during the weekend with limited petite seizures. Then, we brought him home again on Sept 7. He had 5 petite seizures and all were very quick and then he appeared ok again. Each time he had the petite seizure (lip twitching), it seemed to be when good things he always liked were introduced to him (toys, our other dog, food).

We took him back to the emergency vet. I stated to them I was ready to see the Canine Neurologist Specialist. We took Nicholas to the Neurologist on Sept 8. On Sept 9, the Neurologist called and stated he would perform an MRI at 8:00 a.m. He later called and stated Nicholas had a brain tumor. I didn't know what to think. I told the doctor I needed to see him and see the images.

We met with the doctor on Sept 9 and viewed the images. I still could not believe what I was seeing. I called the breeder (a friend of mine) and told her the news.

We had the best Canine Neurologist seeing Nicholas and we could not believe there were no symptoms at all except the grand mal seizure at 9:30 a.m Sept 2 2009. It was just unbelievable.

We kept him at the emergency vet for a couple of days visiting him and they let us take him out on the side yard and lay in the grass with him and see how he responded. He seemed to associate to some things (seeing other dogs, the planes flying over and people walking) but other things that he would usually bark at and have some type of reaction he was not acting like himself. I was afraid he would get worse and worse if we took him home. And, the other few times we had taken him home the petite seizures were happening.

On Sept 11, 2009, we had to make the decision we did not want to make and he is now in Doggy Heaven playing and probably barking.

We miss him so much. He was everything to me. He was a very very smart Sheltie and he was amazing with the memory that he had. He was taught anything one time and from then on would remember. We will always love him dearly. We did not want to see him suffer. He is now in Doggy Heaven without pain and suffering. He is truly missed and we will always treasure what he provided to us.

We will always love you, Nicholas.
