Saying Goodbye To Our Corgi Lucy

Frankie and Lucy

Frankie and Lucy

Lucy is our five year old Cardigan Welsh Corgi. She has always been very athletic. She is a Frisbee addict - chasing and catching with ease and incredible agility.

She had a very close partner, our 6 years old Corgi named Frankie. They made a grand couple - playing and hanging out with each other all the time.

Then we noticed Lucy was limping a little. We checked her legs and felt a tightness in her hind quarters. We thought she had pulled a muscle and applied gentle massage and rest periods.

We were devastated when just seven days later our Vet diagnosed round cell cancer tumour and had only one recommendation - amputate her leg.
This we could not contemplate for a Corgi. Apart from the distress this would have caused Lucy there was always the clear possibility that the tumours would appear elsewhere.

So we are now treating her with homeopathic supplements to help ease the symptoms and make each and every day the best it can be.

It is heartbreaking to see this beautiful active dog slowly slipping away before our eyes. However as long as she has adequate quality of life and is not in distress we will continue plying her with love and tender care.

Sadly and totally unexpectedly Frankie died from septicemia caused by pancreatitis just six weeks after Lucy's diagnosis. Somewhere he must have eaten something toxic and despite all best efforts he became too sick to save.

We have 'borrowed' a friend's corgi to keep Lucy company until we have to say goodbye.

We feel very privileged to have known both of these lovely dogs and they will always be with us in spirit.

These are our fifth and sixth Corgis and saying goodbye doesn't get any easier. Our other dogs lived into their teen years so these two little 'angels' have had a short but very happy lives.

I wrote a poem to help me say goodbye to my friends which I found helpful. I am happy to share it with any other animal lover who has to face that sad moment.

I feel your loss my friend
by: Scott L.

My wife and I just had our first sip of bitter/sweet Champagne after a long day of reworking the dining room area to accommodate the new crates we got for our two new puppies.

Like you - we had to say good-bye to our two beautiful dogs of the last ten-twelve years, Daisy and Jake. Both were lost to bone cancer (Their stories are also shared on this site).

(Editor's note: Here are their stories Jake-e Boy has Gone and My two Dogs and Osteosarcoma)

The Champagne bottle I opened was from 2001 and was a collectable. That was the year we got Jake. We had Daisy for two years at that time and she was such a good dog that we had to get Jake when his litter presented. Daisy and Jake were 1/2 brother-sister from the same mom - a neighbor's hunting dog. They were so special to us. This was our last toast to them, as we lost them both in 2011.

With our two new pups (saved from the local Humane Society) we hope to usher in a good X amount of years.

I wish you good luck for your future and in your grieving process. I do not envy this "saying goodbye" part of pet ownership on any human.

Lucy
by: Hazel, Site Editor

Hi, Roger,

I am so sorry to hear about Lucy. Hope she stays strong and is not in pain.

In addition to homeopathic remedies that you are giving her, have you tried other natural remedies such as flaxseed oil and cottage cheese (Budwig diet) and ESSIAC tea (an herbal remedy)? Quite a few dog parents (on this forum and others) have written about using these 2 remedies with good results. It doesn't hurt to try if you haven't already done so.

I am sure visitors to this site would love to read your poem. I think it would help other dog parents going through the same experience as you are now. If you want, please send your poem to me and I will post it on this forum for all to cherish.

Good luck and keep smiling for Lucy!

Cherish your Pets
by: Mary Ellen

I am so sorry to hear of your loss of your pet.

I too lost my beautiful Labrador Retriever 2 months ago. He had lymphoma and leukema. He was so energetic and a great dog. My other Lab Sadie misses her companion also. He was only 9 years old Sadie is seven; they grew up together, never separated, very hard for her as well as the rest of my family.

We have beautiful memories of Coco and he will never be forgotten. It never gets any easier - just cherish the time that we had with our pets for they will be with us forever in our hearts and mind.

So sorry
by: Angna Byrne

I certainly can feel your pain having lost my 12 year old Golden Retriever Max to cancer in March. My other beautiful golden Erin is fighting the same cancer after surgery and chemo. Erin is doing well right now, even though she still has a tumor that can't be removed, the chemo has kept it from growing or spreading. As you know, it's a day to day battle so I send prayers your way for you and Lucy.

Like you I am grateful for every day we have with Erin and blessed that she continues to feel good right now.
