Saving Pia from K9 Breast Cancer

Pia
Our newly adopted chi/mix, Pia, was diagnosed with a mammary tumor. She is approximately 1 yr, 4 mos old. Friends of ours found her near their home.
Shortly after getting her, we had her spayed, immunized, and micro-chipped. After her surgery, we noticed a rolling lump underneath the skin of her fifth mammary gland. Needless to say, we're devastated. We are so attached to this sweet, lovable, and energetic little creature and assumed she would be a part of our family for many years to come.
Reading about the prognosis of these tumor types on the Web is depressing. Don't do the surgery and she'll die within months; however, removing the lump doesn't guarantee it won't recur. As a single paycheck family with limited resources, this is a huge decision to make.
We are waiting for a second opinion and praying about surgery this week. Thanks to this website, we will also be feeding her a completely different diet regimen.
If you have any suggestions to offer, we'd really appreciate it.
