Sad and Confused in Georgia

by Carol
(Smyrna, Georgia)

Our 13-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer was just discovered to have thyroid follicular carcinomas. They removed the tumor on Thursday and called today to say that there is a huge possibility the cancer may have spread to his lungs.

We are struggling whether to proceed with treatment or let nature take its course. We cannot bear the thought of losing him but also do not want him to suffer for one minute. Do we put him through tests just to find out he has lung cancer then treatment or do we let him go?

If anyone has or is going through this decision we would love to hear your feelings.

He has been the kindest, sweetest companion and seems to trust us so I want to make the best decision possible.

Thanks.

thoughts are with you
by: Dolly in Portland,Or.

I just experienced something similar. My 6 yr. Catahoula Leopard,Blue was diagnosed in May 2009 with High Grade Lymphosarcoma. Once we had the biopsy to confirm, in the 2 wks to get results, he wasn't able to get up, we tried natural remedies to boost his system. He quickly lost his battle. We wanted to remember him at his best. I do wish you the best.

Our families thoughts are with you.

thanks
by: carol

Thanks Rick and Brenda for your prayers. I think we have decided to forgo further procedures and take it a day at a time. We just can't put him through the trauma of separation and vet stays. He seems to be doing well and has not developed any cough. As for now we will do our favorite things (walks where only a dog's nose can smell the wonderful things around) and let him tell us how he feels. I loved your suggestion and have decided to take many pictures of him.

Prayers for your baby
by: Rick and Brenda

Only you can know what is right for your baby. Experience sadly just a few short weeks ago has taught us that once this evil disease takes hold in our littlest children it's only a matter of time and they must be let go to be with God. We will say many prayers for you and your family and can only offer one bit of advice. Love your baby to pieces and make beautiful memories as you will need them to get thru this most difficult time.
