Pug with Mast Cell Tumor

by PugLover
(Nwburgh NY)

My 7 year old male fawn pug has recently been recently diagnosed with a grade 2 mast cell tumor, and aside from monitoring his skin, does anyone have any suggestions for prevention of others. Diet, supplements, any experiences, etc?

Diet and Supplements for Mast Cell Tumor
by: Hazel (Site Editor)

Hi, I am so sorry to hear that your pug has mast cell tumor. Have you read our page on Dog Cancer Diet? There you can find some suggestions on the type of diet and supplements for dogs with cancer.

Have you switched your dog food to a natural organic one? If not, please do. It is important.

Then, as suggested by Laura in her comment, try fish oil and cottage cheese. When I was doing research on this "Budwig diet", I found a lot of data which suggests that this diet can be beneficial for cancer sufferers (both dogs and people). So give it a try.

Another supplement to try to CoQ10.

Research on mushrooms (shiitake, maitake, reishi) also shows anti-cancerous properties.

Hope this helps. Please keep us informed of how your pug is doing. I'll be thinking of you and your pug. Hang in there!

Try Fish Oil and Cottage Cheese
by: Laura

Hi, really sorry to hear that your pug has mast cell tumor. My Lab Mix Sasha also has tumors in her lymph nodes and our vet prescribed prednisone. I wanted a more natural approach and started researching. I learned about fish oil and cottage cheese (so called "Bugwig diet") on this site and I also saw quite a few positive comments on various dog forums about this diet. I started Sasha on the diet and what can I say, it's been 6 weeks now since she was diagnosed and she is doing fine. Still too early to tell if the diet is effective but it's worth giving it a try.

Best of luck!
