Pokey has Tonsil Cancer

by Mary Doherty
(Venice, FL)

Today I received the most devastating news a doggie parent could ever receive. My baby has tonsil cancer.

Pokey, the love of our lives, is a 7 year old mutt who we adopted when he was 6 weeks old. He was such a blessing for my husband and I who instantly fell in love when we first looked at him. He was a birthday present for me (and he will never say it out loud but for him too!)

His health was always top notch! Until now...

It began a month ago when he seemed to be more tired than usual. Our vet discovered a swollen lymph node. She ran some blood tests and they all looked great! So with that diagnosis, he received some antibiotics to fight the infection.

A couple of weeks later he was having trouble eating. I thought he had something stuck in his throat and rushed him to an ER hosptial to get checked out. It was then the ER vet found the left tonsil to be inflammed. He was again prescribed an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and pain medicine.

Another week passed and no improvement so I brought him back to his regular Vet and we decided to have the tonsil removed and biopsied.

The actual diagnosis is Malignant Neoplasia. The lab could not really determine if it was Lymphoma or Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

We do not know how long our precious bundle will be with us but we pray that we can keep him as comfortable and as happy as we can for the time we have.

You always know when you adopt a dog that it is inevitable that their time is short but you never, ever are prepared for it.

Thanks for reading and I wish for all of the doggie parents on this forum that your little one is comforted with you and happy. If there was ever a time to spoil them to the extreme - it's now.

Will have you guys in my prayers. <3
by: Ernest

I know it's hard, cancer always is. But we need to stay strong along side of them. This is something that I have discovered in these past months. If they see you strong and in good energy they also to will feel like that.

We have been keeping my Buddy well fed and exercising daily with walks and also a lot of Love.

Taking it one day at a time and making the most of them.

Cancer doesn't rest so I don't either.

God bless...

Pokey has gone to the Rainbow Bridge
by: Mary

My little boy lost his battle on January 23, 2012.

He was a true fighter to the end... I am so heartbroken but I know now that my baby is at peace.

Pokey
by: Stephanie

I am sorry about your pooch. I hope they got all of the cancer. It doesn't matter where you adopt a dog from, any one of them can get sick.

I will pray for your baby to stay healthy.

My Buddy...
by: Ernest

I am there with you guys.

They found a cancerous mass in my little Buddy's throat about a month and a half ago. I was in shock to hear this news. The only option we had was pasev radiation treatment so we went ahead with it and it did help him but now we totally changed his diet and lifestyle also. It's up to us now to do what we can from here on.

I will have Pokey in my prayers!

God bless you guys!

Thank You J. Weatherford
by: Mary Doherty

Thanks so much for your kind words and encouragement.

As I type this response Pokey has become extremely weak and refuses to eat. My husband has taken him back to his vet to take a look.

I forgot to note that he did have a feeding tube for a week but it has come out on it's own and at that time he made many attempts to eat with myself and my husband assisting him. Apparently we may need to have them put it back in.

To watch my baby who was so full of life just fade away like this is just devastating. I keep thinking this is a nightmare. It's just so sad.

I will keep you posted on his progress and possible treatment.

Thanks again.

To Pokey's Mommy
by: J Weatherford

Dear Mary,

You are absolutely right! You can NEVER prepare yourself for the loss of a precious family member.

Our family lost Max, our mastiff, 4 days after Thanksgiving. I was devastated! I had no idea what this was going to feel like. Even now I cry as I type this comment even with our new puppy sitting next to me.

Spoil Pokey as much as you can and make him as comfortable as possible.

Please read the comments on this site regarding options to possibly fight the cancer. Anything is worth a try.

We had no time to try cancer fighting suggestions for Max. He was in a great deal of pain.
Our story is on this segment of the blog as well.
I will pray that you find ways to fight the cancer even if it buys you more time with Pokey.

My prayers are with you!

(Editor's Note: You can read about Max's story here: How to Help Our Mastiff with Bone Cancer.)
