My Black Lab has Rare Liver Cancer

by Dena
(Maryland)

My dog Mooshie, a black lab about 12 or 13 (got him from the shelter), was diagnosed with a rare liver cancer about 2 years ago though he shows no symptoms except for some elevated liver enzymes found in his blood work. He does suffer from arthritis pretty bad so right now he's on Tramadol because they don't want to put him on any nsaids because of the liver problem. The vet recommended Milk Thistle so I just got some Nature's Bounty at 175 mg. Mooshie weighs 80 lbs so I was wondering if anyone knew how much to give him. Also, are there other natural remedies that would be good for him? Thank you!

milk thistle, etc.

Hi,

I've also bought milk thistle for my pup Bozita (who is also on this site). I found this bit of information on the dosage for pets...

"When shopping for milk thistle, I prefer a standardized (70 or 80% silybin) product. A typical adult human dose is 100 - 150 mg. of silybin, which is approximately 200 mg. dry herb three times daily, or the equivalent in a liquid. For pets, simply use their body weight as a percentage of the human dose. For example, a 30-pound dog would get 30% of a human dose and a 10-pound cat would get 10%. Most products purchased at health food stores have the recommended human dose on the label. Give it for 2-3 months. Medicinal herbs should not be used continuously for extended periods. I suggest 5 days on then 2 days off for 6 weeks. Skip 1 week and begin again. It could be used one week each month as a little extra protection in otherwise healthy pets."

Another thing you can try is anything that promotes bowel regularity in your dog...keeps the toxins down, so the liver has less work to do. Look over the 'Budwig' protocol, and also Essiac. I'm using the Budwig flax/cottage cheese combo for Bozita, and her bowels are much better...she has increased energy, and surprisingly, she has less laboured breathing and that's just after a few days. I'm waiting for Bozita's biopsy results, but Bozita has a mammary tumour, and 3 spots on her lungs...the spots could be do to chronic bronchitis, asthma, or cancer in the lungs metastisized from the breast...they don't know, as they don't know what the spots are.

I've also bought Bozita something called "Probiotic 8 plus"...it keeps the bowel function normal and contains, probiotics (natural bacteria), enzymes, and fiber.

I'm also using something called 'NK-9'. It has natural ingredients (mushroom extracts) for your dog which gets the immune system functioning and fighting the cancers...this is based on numerous studies on this formulation.

I'm giving everything a try...my baby has given me so much over the years.

Good luck to you.
Corinne
