My 7 year old Great Dane has Cancer

by Laura
(Orlando, FL)

Got the phone call yesterday....my adorable great dane has fatal cancer (bone cancer).

Three weeks ago we noticed some bumps on her neck and inside her legs. They kept getting bigger and seemed to multiply overnight. The vet said it was cancer and without treatment she will die in about 3 months, 6 months with treatment. Has anyone gone through this? We are not sure we want to put her through the treatment. She is still eating and playing, doesn't act sick.

We just put down our 4 yr old Dane/mastiff/male.

He was slow moving over the weekend, threw up and would not eat. Then on Monday he started to pee blood. Xrays at the vet showed a large mass surrounding his organs; second opinion on Friday showed the same.

He ate everything that's usualy not allowed in his last week, from big mac, pizza, to Chinese food, and ice cream. It was extremely difficult for our kids to decide and have him put down in their arms...

We miss him very much; he protected us, played with us, even learned to close the door - best dog ever! What's going on with this breed?

Onyx
by: Kay

I just got the diagnosis that my 8 year old great dane mastiff mix has bone cancer.

They have given me all the options for treatment, but I think I will let her live her last summer in peace and comfort.

She is an amazing, care-free, loving dog, and a huge part of our family. She has seen me through both my parents' death, and never left my side through all the bad times. She is a wonderful dog...

I hate that I will have to eventually put her down but I refuse to let her suffer. She has blessed everyone's life, especially mine, with so much joy, love, comfort, and just sheer gentleness. This has been the greatest dog I have ever owned, but I will never own another one. When she goes, she will take with her a piece of my heart and soul. She helped raise my children and in doing so she has become one of my babies.

Onyx will live the rest of her life the princess she has always been.

For Mya
by: Jeff

Today is a very sad day. I had to put my 7 year old Great Dane, Mya, to sleep. I'm still in a daze and very shocked.

Over the last two weeks she had a small swollen spot that I noticed on her right, front leg. We recently had some bad weather and I just figured she sprained something with her being a very active dog. She never favored the leg, but I wrapped it and applied ice. Last night, in the middle of the night, she started making noises and this is when the limping started. I called the vet first thing in the morning and took her in. I left her with the vet, so they could take x-rays.

About three hours later I got a call from the vet telling me the lump was a tumor and it was 100% cancer. Surgery was not an option. They told me that I could give her painkillers, but she wouldn't have much time.

I made the very heartbreaking decision of saying goodbye to my Mya today. She was such a sweet, loving dog and I will always cherish the 7 years I had her in my life. My heart goes out to anyone in this situation.

Sargent
by: Anonymous

My baby Sargent is only 5... he was a rescue and his previous owner is now serving 80 yrs. in prison! He is by far the most gentle of giants!

About 8 months ago we noticed a lump on his neck. At first there were no changes and he was a happy boy. In the past 2 months, he has started to lose weight and more lumps throughout his body are visible. He is still very much happy and still very active but I feel is starting to slowly go downhill.

I feel selfish if I keep him around for too much longer but I pray every day that he gets better! I have completely changed his diet, ordered an herbal supplement online to increase his appetite and believe me he is treated like a King... :-)

I am just torn as to how much longer... I feel your pain and my thoughts are with you.

Blue had High Grade Lymphosarcoma
by: Dolly

My thoughts are with you.

I had noticed lumps in Blue's groin area and neck, we had a biopsy done. When we got the results,I was devastated. Blue was a Catahoula Leopard (6yrs old), very active, played with my daughter nonstop, could not get enough of his ball. Within 2wks of biopsy and getting stitches out from it, he was vomiting and had black tarry diarrhea. He couldn't eat or walk any longer. I put my story up, please look it up and read.

My girls and I decided that was not how we wanted to remember him, we were not going to do chemo (gives them other issues on top of all they are going thru, our opinion).

I took a more holistic approach for the time we had left. We did put him to sleep, would have been selfish of us to let him suffer, his ashes are with us and we light a candle in his honor almost every night. I had his face tattooed on my back with chuckett and tennis ball.

Good thoughts always. I hope this helps.
