Safe Herbs for Dogs - Milk Thistle

Milk Thistle Silybum marianum (Sunflower family)

Milk Thistle

Main Constituents

  • silymarin
  • essential oils
  • bitter principles
  • mucilage

Medicinal Activities

  • Strengthens the liver

Common Uses in Dogs

The primary constituent, silymarin, and other related compounds, support and protect the liver by acting as antioxidants. They strengthen the liver cell resistance to harmful toxins while stimulating cell reproduction.

It has been shown that this herb is effective in treating chronic inflammatory liver disorders (e.g. hepatitis) in dogs and other animals.

Alchohol tinctures of the herb are most effective because they allow quick and complete absorption of silymarin into the body.

Availability

Various formulations (such as lcohol tincture, standardized powder extract in gel capsules) are available through herb retailers.

Precautions

This herb should only be used to treat liver disorders, not as a daily supplement as it may alter liver enzymes.
