Kennel CoughCanine infectious tracheobronchitis (commonly known as kennel cough or canine cough) is an upper respiratory disease in dogs.
Canine cough is caused by viral (e.g. parainfluenza) or bacterial infection (e.g. Bordetella bronchiseptica). Fortunately, most cases of canine cough are not serious and
the dog will get over the cough in 1 to 2 weeks.
Canine cough usually affects stressed young dogs, especially those with a weak immune system. Particularly vulnerable are those dogs cooped up in boarding kennels, pet
shops, hospitals, etc. Therefore, if your dog stays home most of the time, it is less likely that she will be affected.
Depending on the cause and severity of the infection, conventional treatment may include antibiotics or cough suppressants. Some veterinarians even suggest vaccinations
(e.g. Bordetella vaccine) to prevent kennel cough. Considering the fact that most cases of canine cough go away by itself in a couple of weeks, using drugs seem like an
overkill.
Natural remedies is a gentler and safer approach to deal with this condition, once it has been properly diagnosed by a veterinarian. Read on...
