Kennel Cough

Canine infectious tracheobronchitis (commonly known as kennel cough or canine cough) is an upper respiratory disease in dogs.

Kennel Cough

Canine cough is caused by viral (e.g. parainfluenza) or bacterial infection (e.g. Bordetella bronchiseptica). Fortunately, most cases of canine cough are not serious and the dog will get over the cough in 1 to 2 weeks.

Canine cough usually affects stressed young dogs, especially those with a weak immune system. Particularly vulnerable are those dogs cooped up in boarding kennels, pet shops, hospitals, etc. Therefore, if your dog stays home most of the time, it is less likely that she will be affected.

Depending on the cause and severity of the infection, conventional treatment may include antibiotics or cough suppressants. Some veterinarians even suggest vaccinations (e.g. Bordetella vaccine) to prevent kennel cough. Considering the fact that most cases of canine cough go away by itself in a couple of weeks, using drugs seem like an overkill.

Natural remedies is a gentler and safer approach to deal with this condition, once it has been properly diagnosed by a veterinarian. Read on...

Symptoms of Kennel Cough

The hallmark symptom of kennel cough in dogs is an unproductive, harsh, dry, hacking cough, which is often accompanied by gagging and retching. A watery nasal discharge and/or eye discharge may also be present. In puppies, the cough can be accompanied by nasal congestion.

In spite of the cough, a mildly infected dog usually is active and alert, has a good appetite, and a normal body temperature.

A dog with a more severe form of kennel cough (one that can lead to pneumonia) will have a low-grade fluctuating fever, appetite loss, and will also show signs of weakness and lethargy. The dog will also have a moist productive cough, nasal discharge, wheezing and difficulty breathing.

Dogs suffering from tracheal collapse, bronchitis, or other pre-existing diseases that may lower their resistance to infections are more likely to develop secondary bacterial pneumonia from canine cough.

When to See a Vet

Take your dog to the vet if he shows these symptoms:
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Nose or eye discharge
  • Fever
  • Appetite loss
  • Weakness and lethargy

Garlic is antibacterial and antiviral, and is an immune-system booster. Fresh chopped garlic can be fed to our dogs to boost their immune systems.
