Medicinal Activities
Common Uses in DogsGinkgo is an excellent nervous system tonic for older dogs as it improves blood circulation and increases blood flow to the brain, therefore reducing the likelihood of stroke. It is a "free-radical scavenger" and it strengthens brain cells. It is effective in treating "dimming mind syndrome" (dementia) and depression. Also, many disorders such as urinary incontinence, chronic digestive upset, seizures, and behavior disorders are as a result of neurological dysfunction which might be corrected by the proper use of ginkgo. The herb also acts on blood vessels - it strengthens and maintains the elasticity of blood vessels, and improves blood circulation by preventing or reducing the release of PAF (platelet-activating factor), the substance that makes the blood "sticky". Therefore, ginkgo is effective in protecting dogs from developing degenerative diseases as a result of poor circulation.PrecautionsExcessive doses of ginkgo may result in diarrhea or nausea. Dogs with blood-clotting disorders or that are taking blood-thinning medicine should not be given ginkgo.AvailabilityVarious preparations (such as tincture, tea, capsule) are available at most health food stores and herb retailers.Related Topics: Safe Herbs for Dogs unsafe herbs for pets How to Make Herbal Remedies References J.A.
