Dog Has Blood in Urine

by Debby
(Williamsburg, Va)

After 2 urine samples, (blood in urine) my vet rules out kidney stones, (no shards) and an infection. She said it could be a. bladder cancer or b. a kidney stone. ????

I did as much research as I could find - I took her off all dog food, cooked organic chicken, rice and vegetables, and 2 times daily, started giving her 1/2 cup organic cottage cheese and 1 TBS organic flaxseed oil.

It has only been a week or 2, but I see her not producing enough urine when she goes, leading me to believe blockage, (or tract infection, though vet did not find this.) Any suggestions? I'm sick over this though she seems happy and playful, at 12 yrs old - eats like a horse!

tcc
by: tammi

hi Deb,

my dog Max was recently diagonosed with tcc or bladder tumor. This diagnosis was made by an ultrasound after continued sqatting and blood in urine after round of antibiotics. we have sent a urine sample to the lab to check for cancer cells but I have not received the results back yet. Max is currently taking 10 mg of piroxicam daily and doxicyclen for bacteria. i have also changed his diet to Wellness can food and am giving him flaxseed oil over his food. I have read that flaxseed oil is good for this. am also looking into marine Phytoplankton (check it out on line). You may want to check into th piroxicam also, it has been shown to reduce tumors and help the immune system.

I am praying that your pup is healed and that you have the faith to believe he/she will be fine. God Bless!

Blood in Urine
by: Hazel

Hi, Debby,

When you say your dog has blood in her urine, did you see which portion of urine contained blood? Usually, blood in the first portion of urine that clears with voiding suggests a problem in the urethra, uterus, or vagina. Blood that appears at the end of voiding suggests something is wrong with the bladder. A uniformly blood urine suggests diseases of the ureters, kidney or bladder. Also, if your dog has blood in her urine, but has no pain, it suggests kidney disease.

If your dog has bladder infection or UTI, she will have frequent and painful urination. Also, the urine is cloudy and has a unique odor to it.

As for bladder cancer, you can also see the dog straining while trying to urinate and there is blood in the urine. Usually, a relatively accurate diagnosis (90%) can be made using a procedure called aspiration cytology. Please ask your vet about this procedure to rule out cancer of the bladder.

Hope the above helps.

Good luck.
