My son saying goodbye

My son saying goodbye

My son saying goodbye My son and Daisy Mae 9 years ago Our beautiful girl

I had noticed a little muscle twitch and some excessive tiredness and took Daisy Mae, our 9 year old Cocker Spaniel, to the vet. She got a clean bill of health other than some early stage mammary tumors so we scheduled her for surgery to get spayed and remove the tumors at the same time.

After going home, she seemed normal again so we thought her actions one morning a few weeks later, three days before her surgery, were strange. She seemed to have trouble coming up the stairs because her legs were locking instead of bending and she was running into the wall. I worried that maybe she was starting to get arthritis. She seemed to trip going down the stairs going out to the backyard, too. She slept most of the day and by the afternoon she was lethargic and barely moving so we were keeping a close eye on her, thinking maybe she ate a plant in the yard or something. A couple hours later she vomited and then had an accident on the floor. When she tried to walk, she would run into furniture, then flop back down as if her legs couldn't hold her up. She didn't seem to recognize or respond to us.

We took her to the Emergency Vet Clinic and the vet confirmed that she was blind and that she seemed to have fluid in her belly. An ultrasound showed that her entire abdominal cavity was filled with fluid. Her liver was covered nearly completely by cancer tissue and the vet suspected it had gone to her brain and lungs. The vet said the fluid had likely been building up for the last year and that often dogs don't exhibit symptoms until it's too late or very close to the end. It's just how they are, he said. The vet let us know that Daisy didn't have long (minutes, maybe hours if we were lucky.) Sadly, we held her for another thirty minutes and said goodbye through our tears.

We went in there expecting that she'd gotten into something and had an upset tummy and walked out with an empty collar. It was devastating to my 17 yr old son (who had raised her from a puppy). We couldn't believe in less than one day our lives would change so much. It happened in a blink and she was gone. We couldn't have asked for a better dog and we're thankful for every moment and memory we had with her. One day, we'll see her again at the Rainbow Bridge (If you haven't read the poem, google it - it's wonderful.)

Right There With You...
by: TnGranny

So sorry for your loss. Wish I could say the aching in your heart will go away, but it doesn't... it eases, but it never goes away. We speak from experience having lost our 20 yr old pekingese 2-1/2 yrs ago; our 14 yr old pekingese 2 yrs ago; and one of our fosters 9 months ago.

It is NEVER easy to let them go, but what helps is knowing that they are not in pain and they are not suffering. We so miss them all, and were lucky enough to have a special place to lay them to rest here at home & on some days when our hearts are aching, my hubby and I will go out and talk to the kids. I know - it is silly, but we miss our Miss Daisy & our boys.

To help ease the pain of the 20 yr old, I began searching the web for the answer and found a pekingese rescue close to home, went to visit & see if we could find someone to help fill the void - and our new passion was discovered - Foster Care. Over the past couple years we have adopted 3 fosters - and helped a dozen or more find loving fur-ever homes. In our hearts, it is the perfect way to honor and remember our 'kids' who have crossed over the bridge. Hope this helps ease the pain & that you know the pain does ease with time, but the memories and love will live forever in your hearts.

Blessings & Hugs...

Took my breath away...
by: Tammy

I took my 11 year old boxer, Daisy Mae, to the vet today because she started having loose stool 2 days ago. I started her on a bland diet and nothing was helping, she continued with loose stools.

The vet said Daisy has had a small stroke, probably mammary cancer, very elevated liver enzymes and high cholesterol. She started her on anti-diarrheal medicine, antibiotics and liver pills.

When we got back home, I gave Daisy the antibiotics with 3 TBS of boiled rice. She started vomiting after that.

We will be going back to the vet in the morning. I am heart broken. My children have grown up with her and she is a great joy in our lives! I don't want to say goodby, but I wont let her suffer... :-(

Hi JJ,

So sorry for your loss. I know that feeling all too well coming home with a collar and lead. I too lost my grey, my 8-yo Sonny, to liver cancer.

I do hope and pray you find comfort. All our love to you at this very difficult time.

Know EXACTLY how you are feeling..
by: Anonymous

I know first hand EXACTLY how difficult it is to lose a piece of the family that has been such an important part of your daily life 24/7.

A year and a half ago we lost our 19-1/2 yr old (Gramps). We were so devastated the neighbors were taking turns checking on us to make sure we were eating.

On 12/13/2010 we lost our 14-1/2 yr old (Mr P) who I'd had since he was 8 wks old & weighed 1/2 a pound, it was devastating to me, but we worked through it.

It is hard to accept the empty hole left in your heart, but it does get better with time. After Gramps passed, Mr P was lost. We were afraid to leave him alone, so he went everywhere we went, never left him home alone until we figured out what to do.

A couple weeks after Gramps passing, we found ourselves glancing at k-9 ads & found the Tennessee Pekingese Rescue in Oakdale, TN; and our lives will NEVER be the same.

We went to meet some of the 'kids' & met 'Barkley' who had been there over 2 YEARS & was unadoptable due to aggression issues. The long & short of it - we brought him home.

Within 24 hours I'd brushed, bathed & groomed him; and he has been sleeping on our bed ever since - just a sweetheart. He is such a good fit it seems like he's always been here.

We discovered my husband has a knack for working with aggression & social issues, so we have been doing fostering for the shelter. In the midst of everything, Mr P was diagnosed with CHF; I couldn't bear the thought of not having a cuddle bug, I adopted 'Dolly'- an'old lady' (12-13 yrs) who had thyroid problems, asthma & was deaf. We knew her time left was short (vet said 2-3 months tops); but she was so darn loveable & deserved to live out the rest of her time in a loving home spoiled rotten. I gave her asthma & thyroid pills daily and added a liquid herbal supplement. The change was dramatic, she perked up & was running and loving life, just a klutzy silly little girl. For 16 months she was loved & pampered; passing on earlier this week.

Somehow, we began fostering some of the rescues, working one-on-one with them. We haven't turned back since, having fostered about 10 'kids' over the last 1-1/2 yrs.

God works in wonderful, mysterious ways & he doesn't give us any more than we can handle - even if we don't know, like or understand why.
In time the hurt will ease, but there will always be a hole, but it gets smaller in time. The loved ones (human & k-9) can never be 'replaced', but to fill the loss with a rescue to help ease the pain & for us, it was just what the doctor ordered.

Blessings, Hugs & Doggie Kisses

Daisy Mae
by: Hazel, Site Editor

Hi, JJ,

So sorry about Daisy Mae. Liver cancer is notoriously hard to detect and, as you said, once the symptoms start showing, usually it's too late.

Treasure the good memories you have of Daisy Mae.

Take care of yourself and your son.
