Bulldog FatBoy has a Brain Tumor (Glioma)

The sweetest face...it was a snow day!

June 1st... the day FatBoy (my 9-year-old Bulldog) had his first seizure. We were in bed and this seizure just came on. Of course I freaked out and called the vet and my husband. It only lasted a few minutes and he snapped out of it.

Two weeks later it happened again. We made an appointment at UGA and they did an MRI and diagnosed him with a glioma. He didn't do well with the anesthesia, which meant radiation was NOT an option. Surgery was not an option, because I love him TOO much to put him through anything stressful. So we opted for the steroid/chemo way and he's been doing well.

He has lost some eyesight and only sees shadows. It's incredibly crushing because I love him SO much. We've had him since he was 8 weeks old... He's my best friend and my whole heart.

I'm fortunate to have him and still be able to spend 24/7 with him. I never leave the house (since the diagnosis), for more than an hour. I'm thankful that he hasn't had any more seizures since starting the medication.

I am NOT looking forward to seeing his slow demise. I know everyone has their time to go, but I was not prepared for the doctor to give Fatty an expiration date. It's so incredibly hard and painful... as I never want to see him suffer.

I have added veggies to his diet. We aren't able to make too many changes to his diet as he has a sensitive stomach. I just want to strengthen his immune system as much as possible for when he has to take the chemo pill. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Stephanie

British Bulldog Brain Tumor
by: Brody the British Bulldog

Today we found out our beloved Brody has a frontal brain tumor. Don't know till tomorrow the type, but tonight we grieve heavily. I cried at FatBoy's tongue and crusty nose. Because I worry their tongue will dry out and I put Bepanthen on his nose each day - A beautiful boy like ours. Unable to sleep; wracked with grief; I search the web for some information.. some knowledge... some hope. We wish to make the remaining days full of all the wonderful things our British Brody loves to do. Do we medicate? or do we proceed with paliative care... help us decide a s a p.... xxx

Immune Strengthener
by: Hazel, Site Editor

Hi, Stephanie,

So sorry about FatBoy. I am glad however to hear that he has been doing well with the steroid treatment.

You are right - It is essential to strengthen his immune system so that his body can be strong enough to fight the cancer as well as to process the medications properly.

There are several good natural immune strengtheners for pets with cancer. Please access our page on Herbs for Cancer. You will find some recommendations towards the bottom of the page.

Although you said FatBoy has a sensitive stomach and you can't change his diet too much, it is worth a try to give him all natural, homemade food if at all possible. In any event, avoid any food with chemicals such as preservatives, artificial colorings and flavorings, etc. You may also want to see our page on Dog Cancer Diet for more information.

Good luck and keep us informed.
