11 Year old Boxer with Thyroid Cancer

by Marilyn
(Smyrna, Georgia)

I have had boxers for many years.

Presently I have an 11 year old male boxer that was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in July of this year. We took him to Georgia Vet Specialist. We were told that the tumor was invasive and surgery was not possible. They wanted to do a 4 week radiation treatment that would involve putting him to sleep every morning, Monday thru Friday, to administer the radiation. This would be followed by chemo once the radiation was completed.

After much crying and soul searching, we decided that we could not put our baby through this extensive treatment - he would not understand what we were doing to him.

He was a show dog for the first few years of his life so I called the handler that showed him for me. She advised me that at his age not to put him through the treatment.

We decided that we would love and take care of him for the remainder of his life but it is so hard when he coughs and tries to clear his throat and can't.

I have no idea what the life expectancy is without treatment and dread the day that we have to do the unthinkable.

Has anyone else had an older dog and elected to not put them through cancer treatments?

P.S. We had his mother - she had cancer but a different type - we put her through chemo and she had no quality of life. She made it through round one of the chemo and felt better for a minute - then the cancer came back strong. We had chemo once again to no avail. We had to put her down and swore that we wouldn't put another one of our pets through what we put her through. We LOVE our pets like they are our children and do anything and everything we can to keep them healthy, safe and happy.

Thyroid cancer
by: todd

Read about essiac capsules. It worked for my yellow lab. She was diagnosed with thyroid cancer over two years ago. We gave her six capsules daily and in five months the golf ball size tumor went away. Vet can't find any cancer in her anywhere. She weighs 75 lbs. adjust dosage accordingly.

Good luck,
Todd

Please help...
by: Stephanie

My 9 1/2 year old brindle boxer, Daisy Lou, was just diagnosed with thyroid lymphoma. I am devastated and truly at a loss for words. Can anyone share your experience & what I may expect in the future? how long do I have left with my sweet girl?

Marilyn, I am so sorry to hear you are going through this also.

Jake's mom, my heart goes out to you as well.

I have a follow up appt with my vet in Wednesday to discuss. I just got the results via phone late Friday.

Any advice, thoughts, etc would be greatly appreciated.

Marylin, just found out today our dear Jake has thyroid cancer. I'm devastated. And non treatable. Can you tell me the best way to deal with this, and most importantly, when he's ready to go?

Knowing When
by: Sharon (aka shihtzu801)

I read your post and I understand all too well what you are experiencing.

I have a post on here too about my beautiful Princess Mighty Dog and her galant battle with malignant melanoma of the nail bed. She fought for 1 year to stay with us.

We declined treatment for a couple of reasons: 1) they couldn't assure us that her quality of life would be unaffected and 2) unfortunately, the cost was staggering for the vaccine which would have been over $5,000 for the regiment, as well as an almost 3 hour drive each way every other week.

I place great value on my furbabies, however, I wanted her to have the best time she could have for the remaining time she was with us. I think she did until the last week or two. She never once showed us she was in pain, though we know she had to be. She loved beyond the pain.

My husband had to literally tear her from my arms on 12/3/11, the day she went to the vet for the last time. This dog was the love of my life. Please read my post, Princess Mighty Dog has malignant melanoma. You will also see her beautiful picture there. She was stunning. She was only 11 and we had her since she was 6 weeks old. She was petite at her most weighing about 11 lbs.

My husband kept saying, we would know when the time was right. I was selfish because I didn't want there to be a right time, even though I knew there had to be.

I am sure your heart is aching as mine still does, it is so fresh. I am beginning to accept that it was the best thing for her. But as I have said in many posts, I am VERY ANGRY AT CANCER. I will think of you as you go through this difficult time.

Fondly,
Sharon

by: my little man has a mast cell tumor

Hi there,

I think you are making the right decision.

My boxer who will be 2 in February was diagnosed with a mast cell tumor in August. Apparently he had it from birth as it is a mature tumor.

We also opted out of surgery, radiation etc as it does not give him a good quality of life. It is not safe to sedate a boxer each day - my vet tells me that boxers are a little tricky with sedation.

I manage his tumor with Chinese herbs (my vet is a natural vet) and a raw diet. So far so good. His tumor is in his ear so it would have meant amputation and plastic surgery.

It is an extremely hard decision to make but it sounds like you are doing what is best for your dog. It is soo hard hearing about cancer in dogs, especially boxers, they are such amazing dogs.

I hope this helps a little; my prayers are with you and your boxer.
